When I first started my own company, I made blunders with my marketing. A lot of them.

I dread to think how much time, effort and money I wasted using the wrong tactics, in the wrong way, with the wrong prospects. That was before I really understood marketing.

A piece of advice I kept hearing was to create - and use - a marketing plan to guide my efforts. This sounded like a great idea, but I never got round to doing it at the time.

After all, I was too busy trying to get clients to actually write a plan. And besides, I didn’t know what was supposed to go in it. All of the books I bought were full of corporate, academic-sounding waffle that I couldn’t really relate to my business. And there was no way I could justify paying a 'marketing consultant' to come in and do it for me.

So I just ignored “having a plan” and struggled on.

As a result, I found it difficult to get the leads, sales and referrals I needed to grow my business. I was constantly disappointed that I couldn't get the new sales my business needed, especially when I knew how happy our existing clients were with the service we delivered.

It was a painful time, and I’m passionate about making sure you don’t have to go through the same troubles.

However, I'm worried that wherever I turn, I see business owners making the same mistakes over and over again. They were serious enough in the ‘economic good times’ several years ago. In today’s economy, the effects could be a lot worse
